The list included memoirs, textbooks, polemics, and collections of essays.A separate list of the 100 best novels of the 20th century was created the same year. In 1919 Poems was hand-printed by Leonard and Virginia Woolf. His first collection of essays, The Sacred Wood, appeared in 1920. His most famous work, The Waste Land, was published in 1922, the same year as James Joyce's Ulysses. The poem was included in the first issue of his journal The Criterion, which he founded and edited.

Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St Louis, Missouri, USA, to Henry Ware Eliot and Charlotte Champe Stearns in 1888. He graduated from Smith Academy, St Louis, in 1905 before studying for a year at Milton Academy, outside Boston, and eventually following his brother to Harvard in 1906.

The Hogarth Press was founded by Leonard and Virginia Woolf in March 1917 in their house (Hogarth House) in Richmond, London. They published their first pamphlet in July of that year. It consisted of two short stories, Virginia's 'The Mark on the Wall' and Leonard's 'Three Jews'.

A Few Words about Modern Library and the List: In addition to Everyman’s Library, Modern Library is another great collection of books that many here in America have likely heard of or grown up with. And as for this list, I first saw this list in the same book that I learned about the above list, in Rabinowitz and Kaplan’s “A Passion for Books.”.

In 1927, T.S. Eliot was baptized and confirmed in the Church of England and became a naturalized British citizen. The works collected in Literature, Politics, Belief are contemporaneous with Eliot's conversion and exhibit his deepening interest in the history, complexity, and difficulty of belief.

After teaching for a year or so he joined Lloyds Bank in the City of London in 1917, the year in which he published his first volume, Prufrock and Other Observations.In 1919 Poems was hand-printed by Leonard and Virginia Woolf. His first collection of essays, The Sacred Wood, appeared in 1920.
